About SAS Staff

Connie J. Kirkland, MA, is currently the Director of Sexual Assault Services at George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia, where she provides university-wide education and training, as well as crisis intervention for victims of campus sexual assault, stalking, and Dating/Partner Violence .  She is also a George Mason University faculty member in the New Century College and the departments of Women’s Studies and the Administration of Justice.  Connie has worked for over 30 years in crime victim advocacy, as a college instructor, and as a criminal justice researcher and trainer.  She is an ATSS Certified Trauma Specialist (CTS), a National Certified Counselor (NCC), and a Certified Law Enforcement Instructor. She has authored legislative bills, training manuals and materials related to crime victim issues, specializing in violence against women. Please click here for more information about Ms. Kirkland.

Rachel Lindsey, MA is the Outreach Coordinator for Sexual Assault Services. She has been working with the office since the fall of 2001, when she became part of the Peer Volunteer program. She grew into a resource and referral specialist, and now serves as the Outreach Coordinator. She trains volunteers, facilitates classroom presentations, and acts as a resource for those who have been impacted by sexual assault. Her areas of research interest include issues of power, control and privilege, as well as the ways people who have them can act as allies to those who do not and societal responses to victims of sexual violence. She would like to find ways to increase student involvement in peer education and initiation of programming. Ms. Lindsey is a George Mason alumna, with an MA in Professional Writing and Editing (2005), and a certificate in Non-profit Management (2007). She is a graduate of the first annual Virginia Victims Assistance Academy (2008). She has completed Victim Advocate training through the Office of Victims of Crime. Ms. Lindsey has also been a LeaderShape Cluster facilitator, a University 100 instructor for the Freshman Center, and a trainer for the George Mason Safe Zone and National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) programs.

Donna Shock, BIS, is the Education Coordinator with Sexual Assault Services. Ms. Shock began her work with Sexual Assault Services at George Mason University in 2006 as a volunteer, and became the Education Coordinator in 2008.  In this position, she trains and coordinates the student Peer Volunteers, organizes and implements campus events, and facilitates outreach and education about sexual assault, Dating/Partner Violence and stalking.  She has also completed Victim Advocate training through the Office of Victims of Crime, Safe Zone training through the LGBTQ /Pride office, and Gatekeeper (suicide prevention) training through Counseling and Psychological Services.  She works part-time for the Office of Alcohol, Drug, and Health Education on campus performing research, outreach and education, and substance abuse assessment.  Ms. Shock is a graduate of George Mason University and has a Bachelor of Individualized Study with a concentration in Creative Writing and Education.  She is currently a candidate for a MEd. in Community Counseling at George Mason University.
